Excavation Superintendent
Travel Requirements
- Daily travel is required to projects within a 0–120-mile radius of the home office.
- Agreement to additional travel beyond this radius makes you eligible for a salary premium based on the distance.
Key Responsibilities
The Excavation Superintendent’s duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Operate heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders) for trenching, foundation digging, and other earthworks.
- Patch paving and paving installation knowledge.
- Ensure safety by securing open holes with protective fencing.
- Install pipes for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, water mains, and rain leaders.
- Ensure teams understand how to stack properly and rig pipes and structures.
- Knowledge of soil classifications and the correct safety protections (e.g., sloping, shoring, shielding) to prevent worker injury.
- Review project plans and specifications, analyze construction methods, and manage work sequences.
- Address hazards immediately and ensure that Warfel employees, subcontractors, and visitors follow all safety protocols. Designated personnel should also carry out regular safety inspections.
- Promote a culture of safety, conducting weekly Toolbox Talks and encouraging proactive safety practices for Warfel employees.
- Maintain detailed daily logs and photos of site activities.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to schedule deliveries and necessary manpower, and promptly inform project management of any issues or delays.
- Work closely with the General Superintendent, Foreman, and Project Manager to manage manpower, equipment, and supplies to ensure timely delivery to the site.
- Establish and maintain dimensional controls and benchmark elevations, potentially working with third-party surveyors or layout personnel.
- Supervise subcontractors’ workmanship, ensuring compliance with project specifications and Warfel’s quality standards.
- Review shop drawings and field measurements to confirm design requirements before fabrication.
- Purchase materials and supplies for the jobsite as authorized by the Project Manager.
- Ensure no changes or extra work occur without the Project Manager’s authorization, and promptly communicate any change requests from Clients or Architects for schedule and cost discussions.
- Meet with client representatives to discuss project status, address any concerns, and relay relevant information to the Project Management team.
- Supervise Warfel field labor, making recommendations for promotions or terminations and providing performance evaluations as needed.
- Provide training and mentoring to Warfel SPG employees on-site, focusing on management and construction techniques.
- Coordinate inspections and meetings with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Submit required reports and documentation related to job cost and accounting procedures in a timely manner, including daily reports.
- Supervise the completion of punch lists and final site close-out activities.
- Ability to effectively coordinate with multiple supervisors and manage various supervisory roles on a jobsite.
- Oversee renovation and new construction projects, managing multiple projects on a campus setting, when applicable.
- Work with third-party testing agencies to ensure compliance and quality.
- Maintain tools and equipment in full working order.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- No formal education required; must have extensive construction background and training.
- Minimum of 10 years’ supervisory experience in commercial construction projects.
Physical Requirements:
- This role spends 100% of the time on an active construction site, requiring frequent movement across uneven terrain and exposure to inclement weather.
- Must be able to lift or move materials up to 50 lbs.
- Depending on the jobsite, the Superintendent may need to assist the field team with various construction tasks.
