Superintendent – State College, PA

Warfel Construction is currently looking to hire a Construction Superintendent based out of our State College, PA office. The Superintendent is responsible for directly overseeing all construction phases at the project site to ensure successful completion within the required budget and schedule and with excellent quality. This position requires strict adherence to all Warfel safety rules and regulations, including site-specific necessities.

Standard work hours are M—F, beginning at 7:00 AM through 3:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch. Occasional Saturday work and overtime may be required. Travel to and from the jobsite varies; reliable transportation is required. This position requires the ability to work in ever-changing work environments, including variable weather conditions.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret project plans and specifications, analyzing construction methods, scheduling, and work sequences.
  • Foster a strong safety culture on the jobsite, ensuring safe work practices are followed by all personnel, including Warfel employees, subcontractors, and visitors. Immediately address any hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols. Ensure regular safety inspections and reviews are conducted by designated safety personnel.
  • Champion safety as a top priority, empowering employees to adopt proactive safety measures. Conduct weekly Toolbox Talks to reinforce safety awareness.
  • Maintain detailed Daily Logs documenting all onsite activities.
  • Prepare weekly 3-week lookahead schedules for the project, assisting the project management team with overall schedule updates. Communicate upcoming work to subcontractors, vendors, and clients.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to schedule deliveries and required manpower. Notify project management of any issues or circumstances that may cause delays.
  • Work closely with the Director of Field Operations, Foreman, and Project Manager to discuss and ensure timely planning of Warfel’s manpower, equipment, and supplies.
  • Establish and maintain dimensional controls for the project, including coordinating with third-party surveyors or layout personnel, if necessary.
  • Supervise subcontractor workmanship, ensuring it meets project specifications and Warfel’s quality standards.
  • Review shop drawings and field measurements from subcontractors to ensure design requirements are met before materials are fabricated.
  • Purchase miscellaneous jobsite materials, rough hardware, and supplies as authorized by the Project Manager.
  • Ensure that the project manager properly authorizes any extra work or deviations from contract documents. Report Client or Architect change requests promptly for discussion regarding schedule and cost implications.
  • Meet with client representatives to discuss project status, address concerns, and relay information in collaboration with the Project Management team.
  • Supervise Warfel field labor, providing recommendations for promotions, terminations, and performance evaluations as requested.

 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience in commercial construction projects.
  • Strong background and training in construction.

Physical Requirements

  • Position requires spending 80% of the time on an active construction site, which includes frequent movement across uneven terrain and in inclement weather.
  • Occasional office tasks, such as accessing file cabinets or operating office equipment like copiers, phones, and printers.
  • Regular use of a computer and office machinery.
  • Frequent communication with internal and external clients to exchange accurate information.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of heavy materials (up to 50 lbs).
  • Ability to operate equipment occasionally.
  • Exposure to working at heights, with protective measures such as ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and personal fall protection.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, or other structures while carrying tools or equipment, as needed.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
