Construction Superintendent

Winchester, VA

Warfel Construction is seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to join our team based out of Winchester, VA.

The Superintendent leads day-to-day construction activities on the jobsite and helps ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to Warfel’s quality standards. This position works closely with Project Managers, field teams, trade partners, vendors, and clients to coordinate work and keep projects moving forward.

Safety is a top priority at Warfel. The Superintendent promotes a strong jobsite safety culture and ensures Warfel employees, trade partners, and visitors follow all company and project-specific safety requirements.

Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch. Occasional overtime and Saturday work may be required. Travel to assigned jobsites varies, and reliable transportation is required.

Key Responsibilities

Jobsite Leadership & Coordination

Oversee daily construction activities and coordinate work among field teams, trade partners, and vendors.
Read and interpret project plans and specifications to understand construction methods, details, and sequencing.
Coordinate deliveries, manpower, equipment, and supplies to support the project schedule.
Work closely with the Director of Field Operations, Foreman, and Project Manager to plan Warfel manpower and jobsite resources.
Maintain dimensional controls for the project, coordinating with surveyors or layout personnel when needed.
Maintain detailed daily logs of construction activities and jobsite progress.
Communicate potential delays, conflicts, or unusual conditions to the project management team.

Safety

Promote a strong safety culture and reinforce safe work practices across the jobsite.
Identify and address jobsite hazards promptly.
Ensure Warfel employees, trade partners, and visitors follow company and site-specific safety requirements.
Conduct weekly Toolbox Talks with field teams.
Coordinate with designated safety personnel to support regular jobsite inspections and reviews.

Scheduling & Planning

Develop and update three-week look-ahead schedules each week.
Assist the project management team with updates to the overall project schedule.
Communicate upcoming work and schedule requirements to trade partners, vendors, and clients.
Identify potential schedule impacts early and work with the project team to develop solutions.

Quality Control

Monitor trade partner workmanship for compliance with project drawings, specifications, and Warfel quality standards.
Review shop drawings and field measurements before materials are fabricated.
Identify quality concerns and work with project teams and trade partners to resolve them.
Help ensure completed work meets client expectations and project requirements.

Project & Client Communication

Meet with client representatives as needed to discuss project progress and address questions.
Work with Project Management to maintain clear and consistent client communication.
Bring client and architect change requests to the Project Manager for review of potential cost and schedule impacts.
Ensure additional work or deviations from contract documents receive proper authorization before proceeding.
Purchase miscellaneous jobsite materials, hardware, and supplies as authorized by the Project Manager.

Field Team Leadership

Supervise Warfel field employees assigned to the project.
Set clear expectations and support accountability across the field team.
Provide employee performance feedback and evaluations when requested.
Make recommendations regarding field employee development, promotions, and other personnel decisions.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience on commercial construction projects.
Strong commercial construction background and field experience.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
Strong understanding of construction sequencing, jobsite safety, and quality control.
Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to coordinate multiple trade partners and construction activities.
Reliable transportation and ability to travel to assigned jobsites.

Physical Requirements

Spend approximately 80% of working time on active construction jobsites.
Move frequently throughout jobsites with uneven terrain and varying weather conditions.
Occasionally work in office environments and use computers, phones, printers, and other office equipment.
Frequently communicate with internal and external project stakeholders.
Occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work at varying heights using ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and personal fall protection.
Occasionally climb ladders and scaffolding while carrying tools or equipment.
Bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required by jobsite conditions.
