The Frederick Regional Production Facility reflects more than a decade of trust between CarMax and Warfel. Located in Frederick, Maryland, the 79,294 square foot turnkey facility serves a fast moving vehicle processing operation. Completed in 12 months, it serves as a major hub within CarMax’s broader workflow. Incoming vehicles are received, serviced, cleaned, and prepared for resale or distribution to other CarMax locations. From opening day, every space needed to align with CarMax’s daily production needs.
Planning the Frederick Regional Production Facility
The project included development of 26 acres for the full production campus. Within the site, Warfel constructed four main buildings: the Service Building, Carwash, Guard House, and Auction Building. Vehicle staging covers more than 15 acres and includes 2,494 spaces. In addition, customer and employee parking spans 5.5 acres with 337 spaces. Together, these areas form the campus needed for vehicle staging, customer parking, employee parking, and daily production.
Keeping a Critical Schedule Moving
Maintaining CarMax’s tight schedule remained the most critical factor throughout construction. Therefore, the 12 month timeline required disciplined planning, consistent communication, and steady coordination across the site. Each decision needed to keep construction moving while protecting quality. At the same time, the work needed to reflect the long term demands of the operation. Careful sequencing connected four buildings, extensive parking areas, and ongoing site development within one schedule. This approach kept progress aligned with CarMax’s timeline from start to finish.
Building Around CarMax’s Workflow
Warfel approached the work with a clear understanding of CarMax’s operational goals. The Service Building, Carwash, Guard House, and Auction Building each served a distinct role within the vehicle processing workflow. Meanwhile, the staging areas and parking supported movement across the full 26 acre campus. Durable, practical spaces remained central because each area needed to perform under the demands of daily use. Every part of the campus remained connected to the pace and sequence of CarMax’s production process.
