Overview of the Personal Care Addition

The Personal Care Addition for The Village at Penn State added a single-story expansion to the existing healthcare center in State College, Pennsylvania. Set in the woods behind Beaver Stadium, the project introduced a more intimate care setting within the larger campus. Designed around an individual care household model, the addition brings private resident rooms, shared spaces, and outdoor features close together. The work feels less like a separate wing and more like a residential extension of the healthcare center. It centers on comfort, connection, and the everyday experience of residents.

Personal Care Addition and Household Model

The Personal Care Addition follows the individual care household model with 12 private resident rooms arranged near shared areas. Each room gives residents personal space within a setting planned around daily care and familiar routines. Warfel constructed the single-story addition as part of the existing healthcare center, keeping the new space connected to the larger care environment. Instead of separating private rooms from common areas, the layout keeps living, dining, and resident rooms close together. That relationship gives the addition a household feel while keeping daily spaces easy to reach.

Resident Rooms and Shared Daily Spaces

The dining room included in the addition create a comfortable, homelike space for meals, conversation, and time together. These shared rooms give residents a central place to gather without moving far from their private rooms. A courtyard and memory garden extend the setting outdoors and connect the addition to the wooded surroundings behind Beaver Stadium. The outdoor features bring softness to the care environment while giving residents another place for quiet moments and daily use. Together, the living room, dining room, courtyard, and memory garden create a setting shaped around comfort.

Project Completion and Resident Setting

The completed addition brings a warm, residential layer of personal care to The Village at Penn State. It combines 12 private resident rooms, shared living and dining areas, and outdoor spaces within one connected addition. The project stands apart because it focuses on scale, closeness, and the feeling of a household within the larger healthcare center. For residents, the finished space offers privacy, places to gather, and access to outdoor features in one familiar setting.
