Vice President Named to CPBJ Forty Under 40 List

Warfel Construction is pleased to announce that Conlan Swope, Vice President of Operations, has been named one of Central Penn Business Journal’s Forty Under 40. Swope started his career at Warfel in the summer of 2008 as a project intern. Over his fourteen years with the company, he has held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility, including project manager, assistant operations manager, and operations manager. He was named to his current position in 2014.

Outside of work, sports play a pivotal role in Swope’s life. A youth football and baseball coach in the Lampeter-Strasburg community, Swope also cofounded a running club, NE.RF (No Excuses. Run Farther) in June 2021 with the intention of bringing friends, coworkers, and members of the community together to enjoy the sport. Today, several members of the group have completed 50- and 100-mile ultramarathons.

Shulenberger Promoted to Vice President of Construction Services

Warfel Construction Company is pleased to announce Brad Shulenberger has been promoted to Vice President of Construction Services.  He will continue to oversee the Facilities and Services Team and the Special Projects Group, and will be joining the firm’s Executive Team as part of his promotion.

“Under Brad’s leadership, the Facilities and Services Team and the Special Projects Group have worked with many of our current Clients for Life, as well as establishing relationships that have created new Clients for Life,” said Matt Hartzler, President / CEO. “Through his leadership, we look forward to growing our Construction Services to best serve our Clients. Shulenberger joined Warfel in 2016 with the Special Services Group, where he worked with the team to transition the group to the Facilities and Services Team. When the Special Projects Group was created in 2020, Brad was instrumental in its development.

Shulenberger lives in Lancaster with his wife Christine.

Cotter Promoted to Vice President of Preconstruction & Estimating

Warfel Construction Company is pleased to announce the promotion of Sean Cotter, LEED GA to Vice President of Preconstruction & Estimating. In this new role, Cotter leads the Preconstruction & Estimating teams, initiating client engagement early in the project development process and setting projects on a path for success by providing input on cost, schedule, logistics, constructability and other key influencers. Cotter will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the Preconstruction & Estimating Department and ensuring a collaborative approach to leading projects through the design phase. He will also serve as a member of the company’s Executive Team.

Cotter joined Warfel in 2011 as a Project Estimator. He most recently served as Director of Preconstruction & Estimating.

Cotter graduated from Millersville University with a B.S. in Psychology and Harrisburg Area Community College with a B.S. in Estimating. He is a LEED (Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design) Green Associate.

Cotter lives in Lititz, PA with his wife Kristen and daughters Mackenzie and Payton.

Swope Joins Ownership Team at Warfel

Swope joined Warfel in 2008 as a Project Intern. In 2009, he was hired as a Project Engineer, and was promoted to Project Manager in 2011. He currently provides senior leadership to the company’s the firm’s 100+ field operations and office operations employees, including manpower needs, logistics, and quality control. He also serves on Warfel’s executive team.

Swope graduated from Solanco High School and the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He is a LEED (Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design) Accredited Professional.

Swope will serve on Warfel’s ownership team alongside Hartzler, Simpson, and Calabretta.

Swope lives in Lancaster with his wife Melissa and sons Crosby and Tanner.

Warfel Hires New Vice President of Finance

Warfel Construction Company is pleased to announce that Tony Smith, CPA, has been hired as the company’s new Vice President of Finance.

Smith, a graduate of Baylor University, comes to Warfel with more than 20 years’ experience in finance and accounting. In his new role, Smith will oversee the financial operations for the company. In addition to leading the accounting department, Smith will serve on the company’s executive team.

“We are excited to have Tony Smith join our executive team and look forward to his financial leadership,” said Rupert Taylor, Warfel’s Chief Financial Officer. Taylor has been with the company for the past 39 years and will retire October 19.

“After an extensive search, we are excited to add Tony Smith to our executive team,” said Matt Hartzler, President of Warfel. “We are confident that Tony will be a valuable addition to our company, and his expertise will provide Warfel with excellent financial leadership.”

Smith lives with his wife Jessica and children in Hempfield.

Calabretta Joins Ownership Team at Warfel

Warfel Construction Company is pleased to announce Vice President Brett Calabretta will be joining the company’s ownership team.

“Identifying new owners at Warfel is a responsibility we take seriously,” said Ralph Simpson, CEO of Warfel Construction, in a statement to employees last week. “As we tell our clients, we need people that share our values of honesty, integrity, accountability, initiative and teamwork. We also need capable people that understand the enormous risk that is inherent in this type of business and people that have the fortitude to push on when difficulties arise.”

Calabretta joined Warfel in 2005 as a Project Engineer and held positions as Project Manager and Senior Project Manager before starting the company’s Preconstruction department and being named Vice President in 2013.  He currently provides senior leadership to the company’s Preconstruction, Estimating, Virtual Design and Construction, and Business Development and Marketing teams and is a member of Warfel’s executive leadership team.

Calabretta holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University, a Masters of Business Administration from York College, is a LEED Accredited Professional and a licensed Professional Engineer.

Calabretta will serve on Warfel’s ownership team alongside Simpson, Hartzler, and Rupert Taylor, CFO.

Calabretta lives in Lancaster with his wife and four children.
